NUMBER NINE IS ON THE BOARDS

Writing a novel, either good or bad is a personal achievement of grand proportions.  From the original idea or inspiration, one has to develop characters, establish an outline, and then start the story; one character after another.  Being cognizant of where the plot points need to be, when to telegraph red herrings, and which characters you want totally exposed.  These tasks need to be determined ahead of all the other factors involved before one word is written.

REVOLUTION OF FOOLS was released by Amazon Kindle and B&N Pubit over the last two days. This novel is the sequel to MURDER IN PANAMA.

Join Jimmy Hart and his crew of zany characters as they thwart the takeover of the Panama Canal, take on South America’s bad guys and outperform all intelligence agencies, and avert an all out war in the Americas.  Set in tropical yet volatile Central America, Panama is the plum that other countries want to pick.  55,000 words of action-adventure.

ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY

Whether we admit to it or not, writers are part of the entertainment industry.  Every word uttered in a play, a song, a commercial, or a movie is the result of someone penning it on paper.  Every lecture on history or a documentary on a particular event or situation has been scripted by someone or adapted from a book.  Even so-called reality shows are scripted.  Political speeches are seldom written by the politician; someone writes every letter of every word.
All that being said, it’s galling to see most authors; especially fiction writers ducking the “Tag” entertainer. Personally, I like the tag.  I’m entertained when I write the story; even entertained when I’ve read it for the fortieth time. When I’m really entertained is when I’m releasing a new novel or screenplay.  That’s happening in several days.  REVOLUTION OF FOOLS, the second of my Jimmy Hart series will be released within a week.  MURDER IN PANAMA has been moderately successful.  Not earth shattering but it remains in the top ten percent of Amazon e-book sales.  Hopefully REVOLUTION OF FOOLS will receive that same moderate success.

THE CALM BEFORE THE STORM

That period of time between the final rewrite of a novel and the last changes after editing is a very calm time; like sending your kid to a babysitter.  Most writers take a break or begin scheduling promotions; writing letters to publishers or agents.  Indie authors, like me don’t mess with that process.  We know we will be published somewhere in e-book format. There are no negotiations of royalties; it’s laid out by the various e-book retailers. An indie writer can choose one or all retailers. Currently I have my work for sale on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and Smashwords. (only 3 titles).
I’m about to launch all my work( 9 novels & 6 screenplays) with e-PrintedBooks.  This new store is currently being developed and it pays directly to the author when a sale is made.  The split is 80/20 in favor of the author.  Being paid upon the sale is a HUGE advance in the retailing of e-books.  Right now we are waiting for some last minute programming and testing processes. Mid-June is the scheduled launch date.   This is another CALM BEFORE THE STORM.  There are 700,000 plus indie authors.  I'm confident that over time most of them will add their inventory to the e-PrintedBooks retail store. It costs them nothing and one would hope every author would help promote the site to their readers. A win/win/win.  Those readers that don’t have a credit or debit cards can buy books via PayPal.

I’m excited for Steve at ePrintedBooks.  Check out his site.   http://www.eprintedbooks.com/ebookservices.html

A NEW TIME AND A NEW TWIST

My first novel, OIL SPILL, was handwritten on whatever paper scraps I could find while working on the Alaska Pipeline in 1975.  I later typed it on an old Olivetti portable and used carbon paper so I would have a copy.

A lot has happened in the past thirty-seven years; including the world of authors.  Technology has improved past anyone’s imagination, so collaboration can be accomplished from worlds apart.

I’m about to embark on a joint venture to write a novel with another author.  So far we haven’t done any more than communicate via e-mail. Our communication will ramp up as get closer to the final concept.  The other author is a woman who lives in London. We’re about to embark on a project that will meld the minds of two people that have never and could be not be more different; even their writing styles.

Why would we do this you may ask?  Simple – because we can.  The technology and the markets are here.  E-books and internet retailers make this possible. The only reason we would fail is the loss of desire and discipline. I believe both of us have those character traits.

OFF TOPIC AGAIN!

RS is a good friend.  We went to High School together.  We’ve stayed in touch over the years.  Recently he had some medical issues; heart problems, artery blockage, and just recently a stroke.  He’d paid premiums to an insurance company for disability insurance and they denied his claim .  The poor guy can’t TALK.  That’s right; the operations have turned him mute.  Plus RS needs a cane to be biped.  I’ve posted this on my Blogs and hope others will do the same.  RS needs some justice!

Dear, Bob
I got a letter from the insurance company denying my disability claim. They swept the fact that I couldn't talk under the table. They had three pages of what I could do and one line about not being able to talk as if that were not important. They told me that I would have to complain to Wells Fargo if I didn't like their decision. I'm going to complain to Wells Fargo to try to get this corrected. Looks like it is going to be a battle. I paid for the coverage, however, so I plan on getting the benefit. I've been told that you have to fight for the benefits and I plan to do just that.

As I think you know, I lost my voice after returning to work for a week. One vocal cord was paralyzed after the cleaning out of the vein in my neck. They had put in some gel foam to make the vocal cord be able to stand up so I could talk but it didn't last long. Odds are good that the nerve which operates the vocal cord will come back after about 10 months. We are now six months into that program but now I've had a stroke too.

In the meantime I've had a stroke and can't remember worth a darn and can't walk without a cane. The insurance company said they are starting a new claim starting with the time of the stroke and thereafter. The state or county is supposed to be sending someone over to help me with the claims process but I haven't seen anyone yet. The insurance company is saying that they are looking into it which I don't believe at this point in time. It seems like they are playing the old good guy/bad guy game. The good guy calls and tells you he is going to help. He then turns around and gives the information you gave him to the bad guy to use against you.

The doctor is not optimistic about me being able to do home loans in the future as I am having trouble remembering stuff including his name from one day to the next. My heart is out of sync and they are afraid that I'll die if they stop it and try to restart it to get it beating right. In the meantime I'm at risk of throwing another clot because it is out of beat and irregular. It's not good. Because of the heart being out of rhythm, I don't have any energy either. They are thinning my blood to try to help. I see another cardiologist next week. Hope he has an answer.

I think the heart got out of rhythm when they did the angiogram prior to the cleaning out of the aorta in my neck. They wanted to put in a stent to give me better circulation and I died on the table. They got my heart beating again but it was out of rhythm and has been ever since which puts me in a high risk of having strokes.

The good news is that I have gotten my hands working so I can type again.

They make movies about shit like this.  Copy this blog post and send it to the State of Oregon Insurance Commissioner.  Better yet, find the direct number and call them!

LET’S TALK TENSES

Just writing about this subject makes me tense!  Oops, bad joke.

All of my novels are written in the third person, as the omniscient observer.  One of my old drinking buddies, Edward Abbey, told me that a first person novel was almost impossible to get published. I’ll go so far to say he was right.  We were friends but usually on the opposite poles of philosophy.  I was a cattle rancher when we met and he was the guru of Earth First. Somehow we let those differences slide and he coached me on my first novel, OIL SPILL.

Since those early days I’ve been fortunate to hang with some authors and screenwriters of note; Werner Egli, Dutch Salmon, Ed Peterson, John Nichols, and Michael Blake.  I lifted ideas from all of them.  I’ve experimented with first and third person – ALASKA BE DAMNED & BOOMER. I have a character on stage; speaking in the first person in REVOLUTION OF FOOLS.  Should I choose to rewrite Crystal Cowboy, I would structure it like BOOMER; key characters being on stage in first person prior to a new chapter.  Those few people that read BOOMER have all given it five stars.

Screenplays are written in the present tense; like you’re writing an instruction manual for a smart phone.

EXAMPLE; Curtis lays his hat on the table and balls his fist.

That same sentence in 3rd person would read; Curtis laid his hat on the table and balled his fist.

I’m converting all six of my screenplays into novels; it’s double difficult.  Even though the story is already outlined; conversion is a tough job.  I take my hat off to Larry McMurtry.  He wrote LONESOME DOVE originally as a screenplay.  It didn’t sell for a number of years so he rewrote it into a novel and won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction.

I’m twenty-five thousand words into a novel that represents page sixty of a one hundred-twenty page screenplay.  One would assume I’ll have a fifty thousand word novel when I finish, right?  Nope, to make this novel proper, I’m taking two screenplays and laying them together.  They’re both prequels to PARTNERS, the book I took on tour with Michael Blake.  My intentions are to write the four Curtis & RC screenplays into a trilogy of decent sized novels.  In between I’m writing the third in the Jimmy Hart series.  MURDER IN PANAMA has been published, REVOLUTION OF FOOLS is at the editor and HART RULES is fully outlined.  I’m currently in the research stage.  BURN SCARS, the fourth in the series is just a broad brush outline.

Sliding between all these projects are the postings to my two blogs and the promotion of all my work.

The other day a friend of mine asked me what I’ve been up to.  I told her via Google chat that I’d written five thousand words of my new novel in the last three days.  Her response was – SO WHAT?

That renders down to big deal or ho-hum.  Her response was like a kick in the head; I realized not everyone sees achievement in writing.  Since this blog is about writing and publishing, I assume I have an audience that appreciates the efforts involved to create a novel that sells for 99 cents to $2.99.

If not -- SO WHAT?

e-Books, Panama, & Ozone Therapy

Amazon Kindle is by far the best retailer of my Novels and screenplays.  They outsell Barnes and Noble by 100 to 1.  Smashwords try but they come up way short of even Barnes and Noble.  I’m working with the owner of ePrinted books.  Steve reformatted all my novels so they look more professional.  He’s developing a Bookstore that pays authors 80% royalties and they get paid right away – when the book sells.  The final product is four weeks away.  I’m anxious to start promoting his site.

The indigenous people of Panama have been on the warpath lately. Their highway closures and Aero Perlis shutting down have really wreaked havoc on the flow of commerce between Chiriquí province and Panama City.  I have a solution; look at the 49th state of the USA.  A system similar of the ALASKA MARINE HIWAY (ferries that carry cargo, vehicles and passengers) would serve Panama on several fronts.  The system in time could have terminals at all the major ports in Panama and actually connect Puerto Armuelles to Bocas del Toro. After all, we do have a canal.  Consider the tourist aspect and then consider; how could a group of twenty pissed off people could stop the flow of commerce nine miles off shore?

Since Ozone therapy is such a part of my ongoing life, I paid for another back-up Ozone Generator.  It’s a duplicate of the one I presently own and it’s being shipped today.  I was able to recover from a heart attack almost a year ago by taking three injections per week of at least 40cc’s of ozone directly into a vein.  It cleared all the blockages and lowered my blood pressure considerably.  The Ozone and my heart healthy diet have allowed me a natural life for a guy my age. There have been instances in the last six months that some of my friends and acquaintances have rented my Ozone Generator to deal with their medical conditions; prostate problems, H-pylori, ovarian cysts, cervical cancer, migraine headaches, and varicose veins.  So far they have all reported successful results.  I personally use the therapy in several ways.  I take a 55cc injection of the gas directly into my vein every seven to ten days to deal with the scar on my heart.    I’m removing the second cataract by using ozone water and an eye cup. (My first was removed in the same manner 5 years ago). I also purify my water with ozone.

For further information, follow these links:  http://educate-yourself.org/ozone/

Or you can write me for further information.  I’m not an expert or a doctor but I have been involved with Ozone therapy for the past ten years. Once my new machine arrives, I’ll feel more comfortable about allowing other folks to rent my unit.
