The Four Day Growing Cycle

Since moving to PI, I haven’t found consistent quality for some veggies like broccoli, cauliflower, lettuce and green onions, I’ve opted another vegetable as a fill-in when I can’t buy my neighbor’s asparagus.

I watched a YouTube video on FB a month ago that sparked my interest; growing sprouts. I watched the simple process and then adapted it to the Philippines. The results are wonderful because my Pinay, SO, has developed a taste for the bean sprouts and is even using them in lieu of noodles in dishes like Pancit & Bami.

Lumpia made with fresh sprouts is excellent to superb. Stir fry is no longer the same. I urge you to try the process. Minimum effort — rapid results — big reward.

We buy mogo beans at the Valencia public market — they are relative inexpensive, about 100 pesos ($2.00)a kilo. I fill a serving spoon with the dry beans and let them soak for about 3 hours. Then they are placed into a ventilated plastic bottle. ( use my soldering iron to create the holes. One can use a knife, a drill, or a punch).

I use a small tub to water my beans… a simple dousing two times a day is sufficient. Then place in a dark area and let nature take it’s course. After 3 to 4 days you have a crop of sprouts. I’ve staggered 5 bottles so I have a supply for each day. (one for using — 4 in growing cycle)

You can either cut off the plastic bottle or use a wire to remove the sprouts from the container. I prefer the latter so I can reuse the pint size bottle.
